2021 Marie Tremaine Medal Announcement

The Awards Committee of the Bibliographical Society of Canada/ La Société bibliographique du Canada (BSC-SbC) is pleased to announce that the 2021 Marie Tremaine Medal for excellence in bibliography has been awarded to Dr. Benoît Melançon of the Université de Montréal. As the recipient of the Tremaine Medal, he will also be presented with the Watters-Morley Prize, a cash award named in honour of the distinguished Canadian bibliographers, Reginal Watters and William Morley.

Graduate Student Merit Award winner for 2021

The Bibliographical Society of Canada (BSC) is pleased to announce that Izabeau Legendre, a doctoral student in the Cultural Studies interdisciplinary programme at Queen’s University, has been nominated for the BSC-SbC’s Graduate Student Merit Award. The Awards Committee was impressed by his work in studying the French and English Canadian Zine movement in an international and socio-political perspective. The Committee was also struck by his strong publishing record.

Congratulating the BSC-SbC Emerging Scholar 2021

The Bibliographical Society of Canada (BSC) is pleased to announce Alexis Paquette-Lacasse, a master’s student of comparative literature in the Département de littératures et de langues du monde at the University of Montreal has been awarded the 2021 Emerging Scholar Prize. The BSC Awards Committee was impressed by Paquette-Lacasse’s scholarly accomplishments and excited by the originality of his proposed project that examines queer book history in Quebec in the mid-twentieth century.

Who are the intermediaries in the communications circuit and the book supply chain? What is the scope of their impact on the book as an object, and how do their actions fit in with those of other intermediaries within the book supply chain? These are the questions guiding this special issue, which focuses on the nature of collective work and action in the world of literature.

BSC-SbC Withdrawal from Congress 2021

In solidarity with the Black Canadian Studies Association (BCSA), the BSC-SbC Council has voted for the BSC-SbC to withdraw from Congress 2021.

The BSC-SbC’s resolve to be a supportive and welcoming Society for our Black colleagues is steadfast. That support extends to our colleagues in other associations who have not had their concerns about systemic inequities addressed in a caring and timely manner. The BCSA outlined their concerns on 9 Feb. 2021 in their BCSA Statement Regarding 2021 Congress. The Federation responded in a news release on 11 Feb. 2021. The BCSA then issued a follow-up statement on 20 Feb. 2021.

Appointment of New Editor of the Papers/Cahiers

The Bibliographical Society of Canada (BSC) is pleased to announce that Dr. Elizabeth Willson Gordon has been appointed Editor of the Society’s peer-reviewed journal, Papers of the Bibliographical Society of Canada. Gordon is Associate Professor of English and Canada Research Chair in Modern Literature and Print Culture at King’s University in Edmonton.

2021 Marie Tremaine Fellowship Awarded

The members of the Bibliographical Society of Canada (BSC) Fellowships Committee are very pleased to announce that Marie-José Ruiz has been awarded the Tremaine Fellowship for 2021 for her project, “MacDonald College Magazine: Archives of the Ontario Agricultural College and the MacDonald Institute for Domestic Science.”

Call for Papers: Bibliographical and Book Studies in Canada

The central Congress organizers and their partners at the University of Alberta for Congress 2021 are committed to offering an excellent Congress, with many opportunities for collaborations across societies and new ways to connect with old friends. They are still deciding on how to best deliver on this promise in the context of COVID-19 and are exploring all options, including investigating some of the latest technologies to offer us a range of possibilities. They are talking about making this a groundbreaking event. They promise a clear announcement about the format for Congress 2021 (i.e. virtual, in-person, or hybrid) by November 1st. Like most associations, the BSC/SbC is moving forward on the assumption that it will be a virtual conference, running on shortened days to accommodate both time zones and ZOOM fatigue. We are interested in offering traditional panels, but also in exploring new formats for presentations and new ways of arranging panels, so we will be happy to discuss wide-ranging options with presenters as the planning process unfolds, and hope to offer an exciting and innovative program.

Call for Nominations: Tremaine Medal 2021

The Awards Committee invites nominations for the Marie Tremaine Medal, offered by the Bibliographical Society of Canada (BSC) for outstanding service to Canadian bibliography and for distinguished publication in either English or French in that field. The Tremaine Medal is accompanied by the Watters-Morley Prize, a $500 scholarly award.
